Sissy Kelly got her first tennis instruction from a football coach and from a man who had died several years earlier.

Fortunately for her, she already knew how to hit.

"My dad coached a Little League baseball team (in Vicksburg, Miss.)," says Kelly, a longtime Albuquerque tennis player and instructor. "He threw to me all the time. I was a pretty good athlete with good hand-eye coordination."

Thus, when her high school in Vicksburg discontinued girls basketball leaving only tennis, a program headed by the football coach the 14-year-old Kelly didn't miss a beat. …
