SANTA ANA PUEBLO Rarely does an athlete admit to fear. Ryan McVay is an exception.

"I was so scared, I thought I'd let my team down," said junior midfielder McVay of a crucial missed penalty kick.

The kick occurred just inside the eight-minute mark of the second overtime in Friday afternoon's Class AAAAA championship semifinal between Hobbs and La Cueva at the New Mexico Soccer Tournament Complex.

At the time, the score was tied 1-1.

The penalty kick was set up when senior Eduardo Lima, an exchange student from Brazil who has been in the United States only two months and with the Hobbs team for only a brief period, was fouled in front of the goal as he turned to take a shot. …
