Injury-Plagued SDSU Continues To Improve

Lon Sherriff and Rudy Caamano have had similar experiences in starting NCAA Division I college football games.

Both sophomores, Sherriff and Caamano started at quarterback for the first time during their teams' third games of the season.

Sherriff is winning the statistical battle, having thrown 1,418 yards to Caamano's 877.

Caamano is winning the war, thanks to the University of New Mexico's 5-4 record this season and a 3-1 Mountain West Conference mark. Sherriff's San Diego State Aztecs are 2-6, 2-2 as the two face off today in the Lobos' home finale at University Stadium.

"Getting yards and stats are nice," Sherriff says, "but winning and losing overshadows stats any day."

Still, Sherriff's 632 yards passing the last two weeks combined against Brigham Young and Colorado State have kept UNM defensive coordinator Bronco Mendenhall up late the past week.

"This is a team that's going to take its shots downfield," Mendenhall says of the Aztecs. "Lots of their routes are deep-oriented. Their quarterback is playing better. In my opinion, their best two offensive games have been their last two. We think they're pretty explosive."

The Aztecs average 300.5 yards a game, 97th in the nation. …
