Newcomer Chatfield Has 27 Points in Exhibition

Its game uniforms never arrived Friday night, and the University of New Mexico men's basketball team barely did for its exhibition opener against the California West All-Stars.

Playing in practice gear, the Lobos were far from perfect at the Pit before 15,892 fans. But led by Eric Chatfield's 27 points, UNM had enough to squeeze out a 97-90 win over the Stars (0-4).

"Nike didn't ship our uniforms," said UNM coach Fran Fraschilla. "They were supposed to have been here, and I'm a little annoyed. If we were St. John's or Kentucky, those uniforms would have been here."

The uniforms weren't the only things missing. The Lobos' defense was a no-show as well.

"I grade this as a C-minus performance," said Fraschilla. "We're a long way from being a good team. Our defense was terrible."

The Lobos, who went six minutes without a field goal down the stretch, blew nearly all of a 14-point advantage. …
