EHS Ends Dream Of An Unbeaten Season

SANTA ANA PUEBLO Once again, Sandia's nationally prominent boys soccer program has been dealt a painful dose of New Mexican humility.

The Matadors, unbeaten and ranked No. 1 in the country by ESPN.com, won't even be a state champion. The Eldorado Eagles got a penalty-kick goal from Cary Dougherty and made it stand up for a stunning 1-0 victory Friday in the Class AAAAA semifinal.

The win on a wind-whipped field at the New Mexico Soccer Tournament Complex puts the Eagles into a state final today for the first time since 1995.

Sandia (20-1), who had lost its last eight appearances in a state championship match, won't get a chance to end that streak. …
