Industry Group Quick To Object

New Mexico's tourism industry needs to consider changing the rules governing lodgers tax revenue, Senate President Pro Tem Manny Aragon this week told a group of industry executives, who quickly argued the law is just fine the way it is.

"Lodgers tax is doing good, but we need to look at how much money we're leaving on the table," said Aragon during a presentation at the annual Governor's Conference on Tourism at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

"The industry needs to review the statutes and see what should be removed? Or, what flexibility is needed?"

The lodger tax act allows communities to charge up to 5 percent in tax on the bills of tourists staying at local lodging establishments. …
