N.M. Elections Chief Taped Messages Touting Democrats.

The state's top election official, Secretary of State Rebecca Vigil-Giron, has recorded two telephone campaign messages: one urging Democrats to vote and the other urging women to vote Democrat.

The House minority leader called the messages inappropriate, and the chairman of the state Republican Party called for Vigil-Giron's impeachment.

But Vigil-Giron made no apologies for the messages. She argued that she was elected to office as a Democrat, so everyone knows where her political loyalties lie. She also said that if Republican Gov. Gary Johnson can campaign publicly for presidential candidate George W. Bush, she should be allowed to lend support to fellow Democrats. …
