Big deal or little deal?

New Mexicans interviewed Friday seemed to be leaning toward little deal when asked about the surprise disclosure of George W. Bush's drunken-driving arrest in 1976.

State Democratic Party chairwoman Diane Denish called the news a distraction from the big issues of the presidential campaign.

One of the state's best known anti-DWI advocates, Linda Atkinson, said she thinks Bush has been honest. She said she thought the Republican presidential candidate probably had a drunken-driving citation even though he had refused to be specific about what he called past mistakes.

Republican Gov. Gary Johnson, a Bush supporter, said the Texas governor should have been more forthcoming about the arrest and disclosed it early in his presidential campaign. …
