New Designs Requested For SF Trail's End.

Judges deciding how to mark the western end of the Santa Fe Trail are going back to the drawing board to look for new designs, while increasing the commission from $230,000 to $275,000 for the proposed work, according to Sabrina Pratt, director of the Santa Fe Arts Commission.

Designs by two finalists were rejected by judges for a monument that will mark the end of the 900-mile wagon road that shuttled trade and settlers during the 1800s between Santa Fe and Franklin, Mo.

The finalists were Tobias Mendez of Maryland and a team of three artists: Douglas Warnock, Susan Gamble and Roberto Delgado. A third finalist, sculptor Raymond Kaskey, dropped out of the competition to work on the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D. …
