Jemel McClendon, a 6-foot, 7 1/2-inch basketball forward from Tucson, has given a verbal commitment to New Mexico State.

The Aggies have three players who have committed and are expected to sign when the early signing period opens Nov. 8. McClendon's commitment leaves NMSU with only one more scholarship to offer. Three seniors are on the roster, but guard Dennis Desmond left the team, creating another opening.

''Jemel has made a verbal commitment to New Mexico State,'' says Al McClendon, his father. ''He felt comfortable with the coaching staff. He liked the players and felt comfortable in that environment.''

McClendon, who plays power forward for Salpointe Catholic High in Tucson, made visits to Nebraska, Loyola Marymount, Texas-El Paso and NMSU. …
