A conservative science fiction author is not your typical motivational speaker.

But Jerry Pournelle seemed a good fit for this audience, a convention of a few hundred ray-gun scientists, engineers and military officers who are trying to turn some of the stuff of sci-fi into reality.

They are gathered in Albuquerque this week for a symposium on military "directed energy" programs, the Pentagon's term for lasers and microwave weapons.

Pournelle, who co-authored the acclaimed sci-fi novels "Lucifer's Hammer" and "The Mote in God's Eye," told the audience that the United States must continue to push military space programs. …
