More Than 50,500 Opt To Cast Ballots Before Nov. 7

The parking lot was jammed. The side streets at the sheriff's substation on North Fourth were bumper-to-bumper with cars. The crowd of early voters Tuesday afternoon wasn't standing room only, but almost.

"I think everyone will have voted by (Election Day)," said Joan Ellison, whose wait would come to about 40 minutes. "I didn't expect this. I almost walked back out but decided to stay."

Ellison is among the more than 50,500 people in Bernalillo County who have voted early, either in person or by absentee ballot.

"This (in person) voting is the largest we've ever seen in Bernalillo County," said Robert Lucero, the county's Election Bureau coordinator more than 25,400 compared with 1998's 20,000.
