This is the best possible time to build a new hospital in Las Cruces. Or it isn't.

Investor-owned Triad Hospitals Inc. of Dallas is so sure the Las Cruces market is ready that it will invest $70 million starting in early 2001 to build a 125-bed hospital and hire more than 300 people to staff it, said the new hospital's CEO, John L. Hummer.

Memorial Medical Center president MaryAnn Aelmans Digman is positive Triad is competing over such a small pie that her 50-year-old nonprofit community hospital will be left with some bits of crust while Triad walks off with the profitable commercially insured patients. …
