* Lovelace Institute, Johns Hopkins study shows markers for cancer may show up in patient's sputum

Cough for your doctor and find out how close you are to developing lung cancer.

A test of your sputum as an indicator for cancer if the test ever is successfully developed is still years away. But researchers at Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute in Albuquerque and Johns Hopkins Cancer Center in Baltimore this week released results from a study that support such an idea. Their findings are in the journal Cancer Research.

"I think this will be pretty groundbreaking," said Steven Belinsky, cautioning that the definitive study on the procedure is still in the works. …
