An Albuquerque man smashed another man in the face several times with a metal pipe because he was under the impression the victim had been sexually attacking a woman, police say.

Albuquerque Police Department violent crimes Detective Rick Inhoff said Wednesday that impression may have been wrong.

The suspect, Michael Thompson, now faces a felony charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

Victim David Wacondo who will require reconstructive surgery for his face remained in intensive care Wednesday at University of New Mexico Hospital, where he was in satisfactory condition. …
