A sex offender registration law and questions about who supported or opposed it has taken center stage in two high-profile state legislative races.

House Speaker Raymond Sanchez, D-Albuquerque, said John Sanchez, his Republican opponent, is misleading the public by claiming in a campaign brochure that the House speaker opposed the so-called "Megan's Law" and wanted to protect sex offenders.

The law requires public notification of the whereabouts of sex offenders. New Mexico first passed legislation in 1995 that required convicted sex offenders living in the state to register with authorities. …
