Kenny Rankin is a crooner with the knack for relaxing his audience.

That ability comes from Rankin's sunny demeanor and his silky interpretation of ballads.

Usually he performs with jazz trio. Other times he augments the ensemble with a classically trained string quartet.

A string quartet?

"Strings just add that wonderful element to it. A string quartet can give a full sound of an orchestra if they're good players," Rankin said in a phone interview from his Los Angeles home.
