Festival opens with play, radio.(Stage)


The University of New Mexico's Words Afire, a festival of new work for the stage, opens next week with a full-length play and an evening of live radio theater comedy.

The first play is Howie Kaibel's "The Mustard Seed," which has its first performances at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday in UNM's Theatre X, in the basement of the Center for the Arts. The play repeats Nov. 10, 11, 17, 18 and Dec. 1 and 2.

At 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Outpost Performance Space, 210 Yale SE, a group of radio comedy sketches titled "The Big I Comedy Construction Project" will be presented. It repeats Nov. 17, 25 and 30 at the Outpost.

The other pieces chosen for the festival include Susan Erickson's full-length play "Lifting Off," which opens Nov. …
