Rio Arriba Mine Vote Delayed.

ESPANOLA The Rio Arriba County Commission heard almost four hours of testimony Thursday from neighbors seeking heightened restrictions on businessman Richard Cook's gravel mine in El Guique.

"We're up against a businessman who really doesn't want to cooperate," said Ron Tabor, president of the community environmental group Los Vecinos Del Rio. "There is a narrow self-interest here that is making things very difficult for us."

Faced with the deluge of testimony, the commission tabled any decision on a mining permit for the 320-acre site until a meeting set for Oct. 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the county complex in Espanola. …
