PBS depicts Spanish colonists.


Spanish colonization of New Mexico will be featured on "Missions to America," a television program for children that airs Thursday. The film depicts life in the early 1700s, in Spanish, French and English colonies. The New Mexico segment was shot at Rancho de las Golondrinas, and three young Espanola Valley actors play the leading roles.

The program includes a call-in segment for elementary school children that allows them to speak to historical characters and experts on the colonization.

"Ordinarily, children's textbooks teach them about Kit Carson or Lewis and Clark," said Chris Roybal, one of the three local actors in the program. …
