Agency: Arsenic Standard Not Written in Stone.(New Mexico)

The Environmental Protection Agency's proposed standard for arsenic in drinking water is not a done deal, agency administrator Carol Browner said Friday.

The EPA has proposed lowering the arsenic standard from 50 parts per billion to 5 parts per billion. The city of Albuquerque estimates it would be forced to spend $250 million to meet the standard, and it could cost the rest of the state another $150 million or so. …
