Nonconference Season Has Been Rough.(Sports)

Any way you look at them, the numbers aren't pretty for the Mountain West Conference during the 2001 football season.

Against NCAA Division I opponents outside the league, the eight MWC teams have six wins and 17 losses.

Only Colorado State, which beat Colorado 28-24 in its season opener, and Brigham Young, a 38-35 winner over Virginia in its second game, have wins over "quality" D-I foes.

The Rams, who were ranked 25th in the ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll after a 2-0 start, promptly lost to Arizona State.

Utah, the preseason favorite to win the league, is 0-4, with three losses to Pacific-10 foes. …
