Warner Gets Her Kicks In First Year With Irish.(Sports)

Football traditionally has been king at the University of Notre Dame, as other Fighting Irish teams tend to pale by comparison.

But thanks to players like Albuquerque freshman Amy Warner, the nation's top-ranked women's soccer team is turning a lot of heads these days in South Bend, Ind.

Warner, a 5-foot, 4-inch forward and a 2000 La Cueva graduate, is off to a phenomenal start in her college career. In nine games for undefeated Notre Dame, she has six goals and three assists for 15 points and already has been named Big East Conference rookie of the week three times in the first four weeks of the schedule.

The highlight of the season for Warner came Sept. 3 in just her third game when she scored a hat trick in a 5-1 rout of Providence. She also was named to the KeyBank Classic all-tournament team in a Sept. 8 and 10 event at Notre Dame.

"When we recruited Amy, she was kind of a sleeper that people didn't know too much about because she was a track athlete, too," says Irish coach Randy Waldrum. …
