Manzano Bounces Albuquerque High

RIO RANCHO Rio Rancho overcame the lights and Sandia, in that order, for a 28-10 homecoming high school football victory Friday night.

Trailing 10-0 early in the second quarter, Rio Rancho (3-2) stormed back with four unanswered touchdowns in the nondistrict contest.

The Rams' first foe of the evening was a familiar one the permanent lighting system that failed in Rio Rancho's last home game against Artesia at halftime. This time around, the lights went out at 6:30 p.m. and 6:51 p.m. before athletic director Gary Hveem suggested that only three of the four banks of lights be used.

With both coaches agreeing and the northeast lights left off, the gamble worked and the game was able to be played, albeit at 7:30 instead of the originally scheduled 7 p.m.

Sandia (2-2) jumped to the 10-point lead after a field goal and an interception by Brandon MacEachen was returned to the Rams 2. Andre Jackson, who had 103 yards in the first half but only two in the second, punched it in for a 10-0 advantage three minutes into the second quarter.

Rio Rancho's offense suddenly came alive, marching, on its next possession, 64 yards in only six plays. The drive was capped by a 13-yard run by quarterback Brian Philipbar with seven minutes before half. …
