UNM and Wyoming Aren't Looking Back

Do over.

The University of New Mexico football team has looked less than stellar in compiling a 2-3 record during its nonconference portion of the season, having only barely beaten winless New Mexico State and NCAA Division I-AA Northern Arizona.

Now, however, the Lobos' record goes back to 0-0 as they begin Mountain West Conference play today at University Stadium against Wyoming.

"The bottom line is winning," UNM senior nose tackle Henry Stephens says, "especially now. We have to play well throughout conference."

Except for 29 minutes of the first half against Northern Arizona, the Lobos haven't performed particularly well.

"We have nothing to bark about," Stephens says of this season. "We shouldn't be 2-3 right now."

"I don't think we're as good a football team as I'd hoped we'd be at this time," coach Rocky Long says. "I thought we'd be eliminating some assignment errors that we're still making. I thought our offense would be farther along the way than it is now."

The Lobos "improved" to 109th in Division I-A in total offense at 226.6 yards a game. They were 113th last week. …
