City-County Plan Open for Discussion

How's this for a bumper sticker, someone asked during the lunch meeting: "Kill a government. It's a start."

Everyone in the conference room laughed. It was a regular noontime session for members of Citizens for Albuquerque-Bernalillo County Government, a group working for passage of a city-county merger.

Bumper stickers were never seriously considered as a way to persuade people to vote for a constitutional amendment that would start the process of creating one government out of two.

But maybe five hours in Tijeras is a start.

Amendment supporters, including David Campbell, chairman of Citizens for ABC Government, will be at an East Mountains forum today to explain, elaborate and expound on the merits of the merger.

Campbell wondered at the group's meeting this week whether he should wear a target on his shirt for today's forum.

It isn't purely enemy territory, but it's close.

Voters have twice rejected consolidating Albuquerque and Bernalillo County into one government. …
