Claim to Mountain Acreage Challenged

WASHINGTON Sandia Pueblo lawyers urged a federal court here Friday to prevent a group of homeowners from challenging the pueblo's claim to ownership of part of the Sandia mountains.

The tribe contends the king of Spain signed an order in 1748 granting it ownership of the west side of the mountains. The U.S. Department of the Interior rejected that claim years ago. But a federal judge in 1998 ruled the agency's rejection was improper and ordered further departmental review of the matter.

The Interior Department maintains that the Spanish land grant gave the tribe ownership up to the mountain's foothills. …
