Pipeline Safety Bills Debated.(New Mexico)

WASHINGTON Most lawmakers seem to agree that Congress should adopt stricter pipeline safety standards. So far, however, there is no consensus on how to get it done.

House Democrats, at a news conference Thursday, assailed a bipartisan Senate pipeline safety bill as weak and argued that bills pending in the House offer more public safety protections.

But sponsors of the Senate bill contend their legislation is better than current law and, more importantly, has the best chance of passing before Congress adjourns next month.
