Commission Urges Retention of Judges.(New Mexico)

SANTA FE A judicial evaluation commission is recommending that voters retain state Supreme Court Justice Patricio M. Serna and Court of Appeals Judge Joseph Alarid on Nov. 7.

Serna and Alarid are running for retention statewide.

Judges and justices seeking to continue in office after their terms expire are allowed to run for retention without opposition. Retention candidates must receive at least 57 percent voter approval to keep their offices.

Court of Appeals judges and Supreme Court justices serve staggered eight-year terms.

Voters retained Alarid in 1992. Serna was elected to the state Supreme Court in 1996 to fill out an unexpired term. …
