Drug To Be Available in N.M.; Health Plans Weigh Coverage

Women around New Mexico might have an easier time getting access to early term abortions due to federal approval of the abortion pill RU-486.

But, at least for a while, they may have to pay out of their own pockets as health plans weigh covering the drug.

"It's an historic decision. It offers an invaluable new option for women," said Michelle Featheringill, president and chief executive officer of Planned Parenthood of New Mexico Inc. "It's akin to the birth control pill being approved 40 years ago."

Dauneen Dolce, executive director of the Right to Life Committee of New Mexico, considered the ruling to be tragic. …
