Guthrie Actor Dies In City.(Obituary)

* Stage veteran James Lawless was at his Santa Fe home when he passed away

James Lawless, a longtime actor at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis and known for his velvet voice and ability to play comic characters, has died. He was 64.

Lawless died Wednesday at his home in Santa Fe. He had suffered a stroke last week and had persistent liver problems.

Lawless, a native of Brockville, Ontario, joined the Guthrie company in 1965, performing with Jessica Tandy, Hume Cronyn, Zoe Caldwell and Lee Richardson. His first stint with the Guthrie lasted until 1972, and he returned for later seasons.

His last performance at the Guthrie was in 1998 in Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing. …
