Kelly Regrets Plea Deal Not Made Sooner.

WASHINGTON Former U.S. Attorney John Kelly defended his role in the prosecution of nuclear scientist Wen Ho Lee on Wednesday, but said he regretted that a plea deal was not reached sooner.

In a telephone interview with the Journal, Kelly said Lee's attorneys would not answer questions about why he copied nuclear secrets from computers at Los Alamos National Laboratory, or what he did with the data.

"I worked very hard to persuade Lee's lawyers that (answering the questions) was the best way to resolve the case," said Kelly, who resigned from the Justice Department to run for the U.S. House in New Mexico's 1st Congressional District soon after Lee's indictment. …
