State's First Tuition Saving Plans Launched.(New Mexico)

*Accounts allow participants to save for children's education and reap tax benefits

Donna Nieto's third-graders had been prepped for the news conference, but they still looked a little puzzled as the suits and the cameras crowded into their Alameda Elementary School classroom Wednesday morning.

State education officials and political leaders were there to officially launch The Education Plan of New Mexico, and the students provided the local color.

The plan offers participants a chance to save for their kids' and grandkids' future college expenses and get tax benefits while doing so.

House Speaker Raymond Sanchez, D-Albuquerque, signed up for the first five accounts to benefit his children and stepchildren, who joined him in the classroom. …
