State Lags in Fight Against DWI.(New Mexico)

SANTA FE New Mexico continues to have one of the nation's worst problems with drinking and driving.

People in New Mexico are more than twice as likely to die in an alcohol-related traffic accident than the national average.

In 1999, New Mexico ranked fourth highest in the nation in the rate of alcohol-involved highway deaths.

That ranking was unchanged from 1998. But an activist in the fight against drunken driving said Wednesday that the latest rankings suggest New Mexico has become complacent about its long-standing DWI problem. …
