Absentee voting in the general election starts today, and it's not just for shut-ins and travelers anymore: It's for anyone who wants to avoid long lines Nov. 7, said Robert Lucero, Bernalillo County's Bureau of Elections coordinator.

Lucero said officials expect general-election voter turnout to be high, possibly 80 percent of the county's 300,000 registered voters.

"Absentee and early voting is 100 times more convenient than waiting in a long line on Election Day," he said.

To vote absentee, call the County Clerk's Office to have a ballot application mailed to you. The ballot must be returned to the Clerk's Office by 7 p. …
