Sen. Pushes Full-Service Facility for West Side

State Sen. Joe Carraro says his constituents and the more than 100,000 residents of the West Side and Rio Rancho deserve a full-service hospital.

"A community this size anywhere else in New Mexico has a full-service hospital," Carraro, R-Albuquerque, said in a phone interview Wednesday.

Carraro is hosting a "Summit on West Side Hospitals" from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the Rio Rancho City Council chambers, 3900 Southern Blvd.

Elected officials and neighborhood association representatives from the West Side will attend, Carraro said.

The heads of Albuquerque's four major hospitals University Hospital, St. Joseph's Medical Center, Presbyterian Hospital and Loveless Medical Center are invited.

Carraro said he hopes hospital officials and elected representatives can together identify why the West Side does not have a full-service hospital and what can be done to correct the problem. …
