* Bosque Buddies program teaches students environmental wonders with science lessons, Nature Center visits

Jonathan Cortez dipped his net into the muddy pond and came up with a fat bullfrog tadpole.

"Look!" he shouted, waving the net toward his fellow fourth-graders from Valle Vista Elementary School. "I got a frog! I'm going to put him in the bucket."

Sneakers and jeans sopping wet, the 9-year-old waded to the dock of the Discovery Pond at the Rio Grande Nature Center to deposit his prize in a green enamel pan teeming with tadpoles, minnows, and dragonfly nymph.

Cortez, a student from a South Valley neighborhood crisscrossed with irrigation ditches and in close proximity to the Rio Grande, is getting a new look at his environment through the Bosque Buddies program offered through the Rio Grande Nature Center. …
