The New Mexico Activities Association has backed down from a requirement that schools provide students' Social Security numbers online as part of athletic eligibility.

The association began requiring schools to file the eligibility information through the Internet this year, and some schools balked at having to provide Social Security numbers as identification for students over the Internet.

At the Sept. 20 NMAA board of directors meeting, Dan Salzwedel, the association's executive director, announced the NMAA will no longer require Social Security numbers for the online eligibility reporting system. …
