The New Mexico Activities Association violated its own rules in its controversial realignment of high school athletic districts, according to a state District Court judge.

But the Moriarty school district is paying the price.

The NMAA, which oversees scholastic sports throughout New Mexico, announced last year that it was creating a new athletic class for the state's largest schools and shuffling the districts in which schools compete.

When the realignment was first announced, Moriarty school officials were disappointed to see that they were placed in a district with Artesia and the two Roswell schools distant foes mean long road trips. …
