Proposed Burn Sparks Concerns.

The recent announcement of a proposed prescribed burn by the U.S. Forest Service's Mountainaire Ranger District has touched off a firestorm of questions and protests from mountain residents.

In a "scoping" letter, mailed to those who would be affected by the burn, the Forest Service announced its intent to burn 3,800 acres of the Manzano Mountain Wilderness on the west face of the mountains.

According to the letter, the burn would reduce any risk of catastrophic wildfire and enhance wildlife habitat by establishing a mosaic of forest and grassy meadows.

The area to be burned is generally rough, steep slopes extending from the 6,000-foot-elevation Cibola National Forest foothills boundary on the west to the 9,000-foot crest of the mountain to the east and from Canon de Salas on the north to Canon Monte de Abajo on the south. …
