Los Lunas Travel Cost May Rise $20,000

The New Mexico Activities Association's realignment of its member schools did more than cost Los Lunas players a chance to compete for high stakes in athletics.

It's also costing the school district, hitting it in its wallet for increased travel during the 2000-2001 school year.

"I'm looking at an increase of between $15,000 and $20,000 in the student travel budget," says Bill Moffatt, deputy superintendent for the Los Lunas School District.

While figures from Belen were not available, the Eagles also know they will pay more.

"I know we'll travel (more), and I know it'll cost us, but I think we deserve to play on a level field," says Belen athletic director Danny Griego.

The expenditures come in the form of busing, lodging and meals all needed because Belen and Los Lunas were placed by the NMAA in districts that require more travel than previous arrangements. …
