An economic development group in Rio Rancho is planning a business incubator it hopes will hatch more start-ups.

"We are seeing a lot of small companies who need 1,000 square feet of lease space or special technical assistance because they are working on prototypes in their garage," said Noreen Scott, executive director of the private, nonprofit Rio Rancho Economic Development Corp.

Within two years she hopes to have a 30,000- to 40,000-square-foot building that will nurture that niche.

"It's an area we haven't been able to serve. We are trying to figure out now how to do that," she said.

Scott and other economic development officials toured Farmington's Quality Center for Business in San Juan College last month and hope to emulate the center's integrated incubator approach. …
