Double Rainbow spreads its arc over the city.

The rainbow is expanding its reach to the North Valley. Jean and Mark Bernstein, owners of the popular Double Rainbow Bakery Cafe, have just embarked on what Jean calls "our most fun project yet."

Klinger Constructors Inc. broke ground for a new cafe at the beginning of September. It is at 4022 Rio Grande NW near Montano in the Dietz Farm Plaza and should open at the end of January.

But this "baby" Double Rainbow (at 4,000 square feet about the same size as the Menaul cafe) won't be anything like the other three in the Duke City, Bernstein said.

It will have a common entrance with neighboring book shop Bookworks and "big ol' garage doors so it opens up into one big space," Bernstein said. "You'll walk into a common area vestibule and there will be no walls, windows or doors." (The architect is Rainbow designer of choice Edward Fitzgerald and Rod Herrera.)

This Rainbow will have an outdoor patio to the north shaded by a stately cottonwood. It will seat 85 inside and employ 30. The cafe will also serve beer and wine. …
