Laptop Donations Benefit Students.(Opinion)

Instead of sharpening pencils, Jemez Valley Municipal Schools fifth-graders will be sharpening typing skills this year. Each of the 18 students has a laptop computer on the desk, courtesy of Intel Corp.

The fifth grade is the first class in a districtwide program funded through a grant from Intel Corp. Sixth-graders also will get laptops this year, then seventh- through ninth-graders, and so on until all 600 of the district's students and all teachers are working primarily with keyboards and screens instead of pencil and paper.

"We're the only district in the state doing this," Superintendent Paula Papponi said.

She and other district officials were inspired by a similar program in Washington state. …
