* Cattle group claims environmentalists have agenda in planting trees along river

The New Mexico Cattle Growers Association has questioned the awarding of a $143,650 contract to an environmental group to plant trees along the Santa Fe River.

"These folks have an agenda," Caren Cowen, the association's executive, said of Forest Guardians, which has a history of opposing public land logging and grazing practices.

When Santa Fe-based Forest Guardians undertakes work on the ground, she said her association questions whether the group is truly working for the environment or its own agenda.

The state Environment Department awarded the contract to plant 15,000 cottonwoods and willows downstream from Santa Fe's waste-water treatment plant. …
