Author Evan S. Connell of Santa Fe said he never encouraged anyone to be a writer.

"It's mostly disappointment, mostly rejections," the 76-year-old writer of short stories, epic poems, novels and nonfiction books said. "But every once and a while something very agreeable happens such as this."

"This" was the $100,000 Lifetime Achievement Award Connell won this month from the Lannan Foundation, led by President J. Patrick Lannan Jr. The foundation's awards to writers, contemporary artists and Native American communities are some of the largest such prizes available short of Nobel Prizes.

The private, Santa Fe-based foundation tries to advance culture, creativity and diversity through support of art and literature and through its Indigenous Communities Program. …
