County's Voters Petitioned for Jury

TAOS Attorney General Patricia Madrid will ask the state Legislature for at least $100,000 in supplemental funding to finance a citizen-initiated grand jury investigation of alleged misconduct in Taos County government.

Madrid's office on Friday filed a motion in the Eighth Judicial District Court to postpone potentially for several months the grand jury probe, which was initiated by a citizens' petition earlier this year signed by 949 registered voters in Taos County.

Michael Cox, director of Special Prosecutions for the Attorney General's Office, said Tuesday that the special appropriation was necessary because of budgetary and staffing problems engendered by the wide-ranging scope of the allegations. He said an investigation of three, four or more months might be required. …
