Goalie Perea Helps Save the Day as Valley Wins in Shootout.(Sports)

RIO RANCHO Valley goalkeeper Amanda Perea stopped Rio Rancho's Natalie Gomez in a sudden-death, penalty-kick shootout to preserve the Vikings' 3-2 girls high school soccer victory Tuesday afternoon.

"It's a 50-50 chance when it comes to penalty kicks," Valley coach James Duran said. "It's not always the more skilled team that wins."

The teams required sudden death after the first round of penalty kicks saw each score four goals.

Cassandra Montoya scored the game-winning goal for VHS, beating Rams 'keeper Stephanie Hightower. Moments later, Perea made a leg save on Gomez.

Valley improved to 8-3, 2-0 in District 1AAAAA and can gain the league lead outright if it beats Cibola (also 2-0) on Thursday. …
