Ranchers Leery Of Tree-Planting Group.(New Mexico)

SANTA FE The New Mexico Cattle Growers Association has questioned the awarding of a $143,650 contract to an environmental group to plant trees along the Santa Fe River.

"These folks have an agenda," Caren Cowen, the association's executive, said of Santa Fe-based Forest Guardians, which has a history of opposing public land logging and grazing practices.

The state Environment Department awarded the contract to plant 15,000 cottonwoods and willows downstream from Santa Fe's waste-water treatment plant. …
