Take Steps Now, Task Force Says

SANTA FE A new state bureau with its own staff is needed to plan for drought and coordinate emergency responses when New Mexico suffers from dry conditions, according to the state Drought Task Force.

The task force has drafted legislation that would create a bureau of drought preparedness under the Department of Public Safety.

The proposed legislation also would require the 125 or so largest public water suppliers in the state to draft comprehensive drought contingency plans, including information about their water supplies, water demands and conservation.

"If we are going to be in a drought for the next 20 to 30 years, the government needs some way to organize," Jennifer Salisbury, chairwoman of the task force and cabinet secretary for the Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department, said Tuesday. …
